PROJECT PROFILE
Arctic Ocean Coastal Erosion Study
CLIENT: Government of the Northwest Territories
LOCATION: Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories, Canada
BGC was retained to support a coastal erosion mitigation plan for the Hamlet of Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories with the goal of enhancing public safety, reducing future coastal erosion and flood hazards, and developing mitigation options to increase community resilience. The risk posed by surge events and flooding are anticipated to increase due to climate change in low lying regions. BGC supported the design of structural and non-structural erosion mitigation concepts, providing input for a sand beach with reservoir and the revetment. BGC also evaluated potential changes to the permafrost conditions on the island and shoreline’s subsurface through geothermal modelling sensitivity analyses.
