Risk management made easier

Cambio: Earth science software grounded in BGC’s applied expertise

Cambio™ began inside BGC Engineering as a practical response to a real infrastructure challenge: how to help engineers and geoscientists organize complex geohazard information, understand changing ground and water conditions, and support more defensible risk-informed decisions.
Today, Cambio is advanced by Cambio Earth, an independent software company within the BGC Group of Companies. The company may be new, but the experience behind the platform was earned over decades of applied earth science, engineering practice, and real infrastructure risk management.

From BGC innovation to Cambio Earth

BGC began developing digital geohazard tools long before “digital transformation” became a common industry priority. The original goal was to make better risk-informed decisions by developing a tool to manage complex earth science information more consistently and connect evidence across sites and assets.

Key milestones in Cambio’s evolution

1998

BGC launched its first geohazard database platforms to support pipeline operators managing landslide and erosion risks.

2008

The software platform was publicly launched under the Cambio brand.

2012

Cambio transitioned to a multi-tenant software-as-a-service platform, enabling scalable adoption across infrastructure operators.

2014

Real-time flood, precipitation, and seismic monitoring and alerting services were introduced.

2018

Cambio Version 3 launched as a cloud-optimized platform with Cambio Mobile and advanced visualization tools.

2021

BGC launched fully automated 3D point cloud change detection, including a patented cloud GPU-based processing system for detecting landscape change.

2022

Cambio for Mining was introduced to support digital transformation of tailings storage facility management.

2024

Cambio Earth was created as an independent software company to scale the platform beyond its origins inside BGC Engineering.

Why BGC uses Cambio

BGC uses Cambio to support modern geohazard, monitoring, and infrastructure risk programs.

The platform helps teams bring together the information needed to understand changing site conditions, prioritize risk, document decisions, and communicate findings clearly. It provides a structured way to connect field observations, inspections, monitoring data, remote sensing outputs, historical records, asset information, and engineering interpretation in one geospatial environment.

BGC applies Cambio across various projects, including:

  • Geohazard inventories and risk assessments
  • Field inspections and mobile data collection
  • Instrumentation and real-time monitoring programs
  • Remote sensing, lidar, InSAR, imagery, and change detection analysis
  • Construction quality assurance and earthworks tracking
  • Tailings storage facility monitoring and management
  • Trigger action response plans, alerts, and reporting
  • Risk communication for owners, operators, regulators, and stakeholders

For BGC, Cambio has become more than a GIS tool. It is a way to apply earth science knowledge consistently across complex infrastructure programs and help clients move from scattered information to clearer, more defensible decisions.
