Sophie Penhall

Senior Geotechnical Engineer

Sophie Penhall (M.Eng., P.Eng.) is a Senior Geotechnical Engineer who specializes in rock mechanics in mining applications. She has worked in both consulting and operations, applying principles of geotechnical engineering to field investigation, rock mass characterization, structural geology, stability assessments and slope design, mine operations, and execution of various open pit and slope stability projects. Given her prior employment as a Geotechnical Engineer at an operating coal mine, Sophie provides experience in the excavation and construction of open pit slopes and waste dumps and implementation of various monitoring systems (e.g., radars, GPS, prisms, VWPs, wirelines) to ensure a safe and productive environment for operations. Her time in operations provided much exposure to visual inspections of active and inactive pit walls and waste dumps, ground control management, slope failure mitigation and recovery, compilation of safe work plans, and working with various operational mining groups including permitting compliance. Sophie is a registered Professional Engineer in British Columbia and Saskatchewan.
