Brisbane's Tailings Specialist: BGC Engineering Scales Up in Australia

Applied earth sciences and geotechnical specialist BGC Engineering is expanding its Australian tailings offering from Brisbane, supporting mining operators nationwide with access to a global team that has designed, reviewed and operated some of the world’s most complex tailings storage facilities.

Four years after opening its first Australian office, Canadian-headquartered BGC Engineering has established a growing tailings and mine waste practice working across Australia. Since 2022, the Brisbane team has grown from two professionals to 12, reflecting increasing demand for specialist tailings expertise across the mining sector.

 

 

The Brisbane team includes three Principal Engineers with diverse and complementary experience across tailings engineering, seismic assessment, liquefaction assessment, governance, risk assessment, engineering geology and rock slope engineering, with some bringing over 20 years of experience in the Australian market. This provides strong senior technical capability locally, while allowing the team to draw on broader specialist expertise across BGC as required.

The expansion comes as the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) continues to influence how mining companies manage risk, appoint Engineers of Record, undertake independent technical reviews and plan for closure. BGC is positioning its Brisbane practice firmly within this market, providing Engineer of Record and Designer of Record services, independent third-party reviews, tailings storage facility design, trade-off studies, site characterisation,  and closure-related engineering.

Supporting the Australian practice is BGC’s One Team Model. As an employee-owned organisation without traditional profit centres or business units, project teams can be assembled around the specific technical requirements of each assignment. This gives Australian clients access to BGC’s global pool of over 900 staff, which includes engineers, geoscientists, technicians and software professionals across more than 20 offices in North and South America, the Caribbean, Europe and Australia.

 

 

The breadth of BGC’s recent Australian work reflects that model. From Brisbane, the firm is supporting major mining operations in New South Wales with independent technical review of tailings remediation and dam-raise works, as well as prefeasibility and feasibility-level assessments of alternative tailings storage options. In Western Australia, BGC personnel have supported operating mine sites with implementation of GISTM requirements for high-consequence tailings facilities and have undertaken feasibility-level tailings design for major resource developments.

Elsewhere in Australia, the team has delivered mine closure and cover design, independent geotechnical reviews and ongoing advisory services covering tailings, waste rock and geohazards. The Brisbane practice also draws directly on BGC’s broader international experience in long-term Engineer of Record and Designer of Record assignments, including large-scale tailings facilities with footprints approaching 900 hectares and embankment heights exceeding 150 metres.

This combination of local delivery, senior multidisciplinary capability and international experience allows the team to draw on specialists with practical experience across the full tailings lifecycle, from site selection and feasibility through design, construction, operations, independent review, risk management and closure.
