BGC appoints Lauren Hutchinson as next CEO

BGC announces its next Chief Executive Officer as the company looks toward its 2035 Big Goal.

BGC Engineering Inc. (BGC) has appointed Lauren Hutchinson, M.Sc., P.Eng., as its next Chief Executive Officer, effective October 30, 2026.

Lauren, who currently serves as BGC’s Head of Innovation and Sustainability, will succeed Steve Hedberg, who has led the company as CEO for the past 18 years. Steve will continue to support Lauren through the transition and will remain a member of BGC’s Board.

“Lauren is a thoughtful and accomplished leader with a deep understanding of BGC, our people, and our culture,” said Derek Kinakin, Board Director and Principal Engineering Geologist. “She brings strong judgment, curiosity and a genuine ability to bring people together. The Board has tremendous confidence in Lauren and in the experienced Management Team around her, and we look forward to supporting them as BGC enters its next chapter.”

Lauren joined BGC in 2011 and has built broad experience across the company through technical, strategic, and leadership roles. She has worked nationally and internationally across BGC’s sectors as a senior geotechnical engineer, and has held leadership positions with BGC’s Communities Sector, Risk-Informed Decision Making Knowledge Centre, Strategy Stewardship Group and BGC Squared, BGC’s community impact program. She currently serves as Head of Innovation and Sustainability.

Throughout her career at BGC, Lauren has worked at the intersection of applied earth science, risk, innovation and responsible business practices. Her experience has given her a broad perspective on the complex challenges facing BGC’s clients and the opportunities for earth science, technology and collaboration to help address them.

“I’m honoured to have the opportunity to lead BGC and the extraordinary people who make this company what it is,” said Lauren. “BGC has a strong foundation built on technical excellence, curiosity, collaboration and a willingness to take on difficult challenges. I’m looking forward to building on that foundation as we continue to evolve, work across disciplines and geographies, and find new ways to create value for our clients and communities.”

Lauren takes on the CEO role as BGC continues to grow its people, technical capabilities, and global presence. Founded in 1990, the employee-owned applied earth sciences consulting firm has grown to approximately 900 people working from 22 offices around the world, helping clients address complex earth science challenges in mining, pipelines, transportation, energy, and communities.

Her appointment also comes as BGC looks toward its 10-year 2035 Big Goal: to redefine earth science practice, creating a more resilient and sustainable world.

For Steve, the transition marks an important moment after 18 years leading the company.

“One of the most rewarding parts of leading BGC has been watching the next generation of leaders grow and thrive,” said Steve. “Lauren is among the very best of them. She understands who we are, what our clients expect from us, and what our people need to succeed. I have great confidence in her leadership and am excited to see how she and the team continue to build on everything we have accomplished together.”

Steve and Lauren will work closely throughout October to support a smooth leadership transition. Following Lauren’s appointment as CEO on October 30, Steve will continue to serve BGC as a member of the Board.
